What is the best way to color gumpaste? I am trying to get a nice black. Should I mix colors or use black gel?
It's so difficult to color fondant and gumpaste black with any gel colors. Do you have any premade black fondant that you can knead the gumpaste into? That might be easier. It might take longer to dry but it's worth a try. I know adding black to the white gumpaste doesn't create black and only makes me mad! :)
I have never had problems with coloring fondant or g/p black. I use wilton or americolor or whatever brand i have at the time. I color it, let it set up some, then color some more ,etc. Always usable and no problem. Duff does have a good tasting black, but i hear it is hard to cover a cake with it . I only use it for decos , when i don,t color it myself. Same with red.
I usually just use black gel into a fondant/tylose mixture. But I've bought black Satin Ice fondant and added tylose to that which works very well. Maybe better, especially for beginner.
