AJust recently I started building my own cake structures out of PVC pipe, cakes for family. Recently I was asked to make a 3D cake for someone else. How do you go about asking the person for the structure back? Or should I assume because it's been handle by someone else, it is not safe to reuse? I am not charging the client other than what it costs me to make the cake. Planning on having a cake studio within a year, so for now it is just practice.

Personally, unless it was a structure you think you'll get multiple uses out of, I would just build the cost of the structure into the price of the cake.  But, if you DO want it back, the best way is to let the customer know up front, and actually hold a deposit until they return it.  I think multiple uses are fine as long as you can clean and sanitize it properly.
