Hi again,


This week I am sort of on vacation but I did have two orders. I have one cake I just finished filling and crumbcoating that I will actually decorate tomorrow and is due Sunday. I had a client meeting for a wedding cake at the end of July and 2 dozen cupcakes as well so it was just sort of a week off<G>. I am at my daughters house for the week so we have been having tons of fun too!

Good Evening Cat,


Me too,  No cake this week.  I had a tasting today.  Which I really did not have to do.  The groom is the son of a friend from church. They came just to place their order and although it was a given that I would do the cake, the bride & groom had never tasted my cake and I decided this would be a good time for them.


Have a few orders of cupcakes for the 4th and after that get ready for my big Eiffel Tower cake project.


I'm having problems with my printer tonite so I'm glad I don't have a cake on top of this.  It is printing with white line across the paper.  This is my printer for frosting sheets and I have 2 customers waiting for their sheets.  yikes, what am I doing on the cputer?  icon_cry.gif

Ginn, I HATE printers..truly I think they have it "out" for me! Is it possible that a nozzle is jammed? Just a thought.


I have nothing for the 4th that I don't choose to do myself<G>. I am booked every week past that now in July but free this upcoming week. 


We are having a nasty heatwave in California right now. I'm over in the Bay Area and it was mid-90's today...that is really hot for here. It was 108 in Sacramento today where my husband is so it's truly nasty hot here. I don't go home till Monday or Tuesday so I'm praying the 4th will be cool enough to be outside to watch the fireworks at our local fair grounds. Otherwise it will be a week of hiding in the A/C!

No.. I fixed it.  I've been pulling my hair out for about 3 weeks with this printer.  Funny thing it was a paper jammed all the way in the back.




Yes Cat, I'm here in L.A. and its been scorchers for 2 days now.  We've been in the high 80's los 90's I've done my baking in the middle of the nite.  Like at 3am.  My poor daughter and grandkids live in one of the suburbs and its always about 10 degrees hotter than where I am.  Lucky for them they have a pool. :)   I will be doing just like you. under the a/c.


Wonder if anybody is going to cake camp in Vegas?

AHello im just a beginner but today I made theis captain America cake for my brothers birthday. Its my first tier cake. Its yellow on the bottom and chocolate cake on top with a buttercream frosting I used homemade white modeling chocolate instead of fondant to cover the cake. Its not the best but the more practice I get I will get better. :) wha t do you think?[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

I think that it's an awesome first project for a stacked cake! I bet your brother was simply thrilled! And, yes, I think you will just keep getting better and better! Just keep on working and challenging yourself. I've been doing this for 5 years now and I find that those cakes where I was able to try something new and that I had to work just that much harder on are the ones that I am the proudest of.

I'm up!! This is my first post, so Hi from Pleasant View, and CAT thanks for having this lil get together. I just sort of blew into the Cake World pretty unintentionally on St. Patty's Day 2013 (Well, I am Irish-American). Miss-bakes-alot That looks amazing and your Captain America is so detailed and awesomely cute sitting on the cake! GREAT JOB!! I took my supplies 500 miles to Panama City Beach, and made this one in TOTAL humidity and 80-90 degree weather, windows open, no air conditioning, to test my skills in different conditions. It kept melting and I had to refreeze in between fondant layering. This was my third cake ever, made in honor of my son, LCpl Gabe Raney, who gave his life fighting terrorism in 2010, and who loved red legos and cake. Glad to meet y'all~Penny AKA Gold Star Mom

AThank you both. I appreciate your kind words. My brother hasn't seen it yet because his birthday is tomorrow, but im sure he will love it he loves Captain America. I im glad it turned out so well. Wow 5 years thats great! Ive been doing this for about 4months i haven't had any schooling for it either I get most of my info off of ace of cakes, cake boss and youtube. So far ive made 6 cakes and some cupcakes.

Slow week for me only did one cake but it turned out well. I did a Papa Smurf cake based off a cake I saw here just a slightly different design. Found a coloring page online printed it to size and trimmed the cake to shape. This was for a coworkers of my fiancé birthday I was told all the guys loved it and it got my name out around there have a possible birthday order from one of them this fall.




I will be working on my fiancés cake this week. His birthday is the 5th and I want to do a zombie cake. I also need to start on my nephews Red Sox cake get the chocolate stuff made up in advance and royal icing decorations done.  The bottom tier of his cake the 12" round is going to be a dummy cake as we don't need that much cake so just waiting on it to arrive so I can cover it and the cake board with fondant ahead of time. 


I also plan on doing baseball cake pops, cookies and chocolate covered strawberries for my nephew.  I also need to make some cake pops to send to my sister in Texas as a sample. She wants me to make super hero pops for her youngest birthday this fall but as she's never had them doesn't know if they'll like them.  Since she's my sister I'll send her the samples.

Sorry I missed you all last night. I couldn't take a break. I've being working on two cakes that where both a serious challenge. I'll post an update later today with pictures. My first 4-tier wedding cake and a cake for Icing Smiles. Still working this morning, both with early deliveries, then I can breathe.

I've been MIA but now I'm back. I took a short break due to feeling sick all the time and being very tired (1st trimester sucks!). Anyways, I made this Pokemon cake for my best friend, whose son is having his 7th birthday party today. This is my first attempt at airbrushing. It's chocolate cake with creme brulee buttercream filling.

AWow! I heart that Pokemon cake & Tinkerbell is so sweet. I want to pinch that Papa Smurf!

Gold Star, I'm convinced that Panama City is the most humid spot on the world. I live in Charleston & it gets humid, but not like there.

MissBakes, welcome. Yes, not only will you get better but it will get easier! I really like how the star looks nice & flush instead of just stuck up there.

AI had a fairly light week. I really struggle with this cake. Nothing particularly difficult, I think it was mental. I just didn't like the design. [IMG][/IMG]

I should have been more clean & precise. I wasn't. It's for a 2 year old birthday, & I'm sure they will like it, but I see all the flaws.

Wow! How wonderful to come in this morning and see all the great cakes! 


I think the Smurf came out GREAT! Love Tink...but then she is my favorite Disney character since I was 4! And I do know what you mean about working on a precise cake and always thinking I should have been more clean and more precise but I have to tell you that your cake looks very clean and precise!!! The Pokemon cake this week is my favorite so far. I'm in awe of anyone who can get an airbrush to do anything. It turned out wonderfully and I can't wait to show my 12 year old later today...he will LOVE it!


The Lego cake is amazing in the fact that I can barely get fondant to do anything when the humidity is under 50%...I can NOT imagine trying to get it to do anything close to what you did in that humidity Gold Star! What a nice tribute to your son...not just the design but the desire and work that went into making it for him.

Lovebug, great job, I think the new smurf movie is coming out soon or is already out.  1 of the 2 lol


OT, congratulations glad your back.  Awesome cake.  You did great airbrushing and the tink is so adorable.


DD, we always see our own flaws, lol  You know "We are our own worst critics"  Still very nice cake and the design is well done.

Thanks New Friends~I should say the entire reason I make cakes, cookies, and treats is because I was looking for a way to deal with my grief.  I just give all the cakes away...People seem to love them, so it's a win-win. How did you all get started and when? I just began on St. Patrick's Day this year, a few months ago. I bought a cheesecake pan, but decided to bake a cake in it, lol, and it came out like this...

and I had never made fondant or buttercream, and I was immediately and gratefully hooked on something, cake decorating, that took over my thinking, and I was able to smile again for the first time in a while for long periods of time...

AI'm new to actually decorating cakes and my boyfriend's ten-year old daughter saw me looking at cakes for ideas to try and wants me to bake her birthday cake in August. She wants bright colors and zebra print... She has more faith in me than I do, looks like I'll be watching lots of tutorials especially since the last two layer cakes I made were shorter than what I had expected and she wants a two- tiered cake. Ideas or suggestions?

Gold Star Mom, your story is beautiful and encouraging. Cake decorating has been away for me to escape to. I started because I couldn't find a baker to make a cake that was dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, and soy-free for my allergic children it is was a stress reliever for me, being home all day with 3 toddlers . It started as a hobby, but now it's a part-time business. 


DelicoiusDesserts, I don't know what you are talking about, that is a beautiful cake. I understand how you feel, though. Sometimes you are just not into a cake and it's hard to give your best or no matter what you do, you aren't going to like the cake.


OT, your cake is very sweet and cute.


So for this week, I had he biggest challenges yet. I did a dream cake for Icing Smiles that needed to be dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, and low sugar. I experimented with recipes for three weeks on how to get a cake to have some volume without sugar or eggs. The only thing that worked was using pumpkin or banana to give it some structure and binding power and yeast to get it to rise. I was given permission to use fondant to cover it because it could be peeled off, but I couldn't use any frosting. So here it is, it's essentially banana bread covered in fondant to make it look like a cake. I hate that the fondant was smooth, because I wanted to deliver a flawless cake for the family, but I just couldn't figure out how to get all the lumps out of the bread without destroying it. I did shave it down with a knife some.  It still didn't rise as much as I wanted it to, so my design options were a bit limited on what I could put on such a short cake. 




Did I say I had no business accepting the cake for Icing Smiles because I had already booked my largest cake yet. But they couldn't find a baker and  just couldn't help but saying yes.  So I also did my first 4-tier wedding cake. I didn't do this alone, because I know my abilities and how long it takes me to do things I knew if I was going to pull off both cakes I'd need reinforcements because I only work on cakes after my kids go to bed. My dear sisters were kind enough come from North Carolina and watch the kids so I can work on the cakes during the day. I couldn't ask for better sisters. One of my sisters even watched a youtube video on doing drapes on a cake, because I never did that before and made the drapes for the cake. She doesn't do cake decorating at all. Now she is totally psyched about cake decorating and is signing up for Wilton classes where she lives. The best part of this weekend was making a new cake decorating convert!



Here's the picture of the cake It was so nice to be able to do sugar flowers for once.

tdovewings ~ Thanks for the kind words. I think you are where I was twenty years ago. I was at home with my son and he and I needed to supplement my income, so we started a cookie business. I restarted it this year (after 14 years) because I retired from tv news, and then my son was killed in Afghanistan. I needed work again for a different reason...comfort. He and I used to make and bake, decorate, tie them up with ribbons and bows, and sell them together. He helped me deal with the problems of Life. I would give anything to have him back~ So I ended up here with all of you, and glad to be here~icon_smile.gif

 Your cake is reminding me of one I just made for my brother's 53rd bday. Here it is. The pitcher's mound didn't look like I wanted, I put the base down on it, and it looked more like is a pitcher's mound! lol But the colors of the cakes are similar. His name is JOEY, so I put the letters as if they were running the bases. (Guess who didn't have time to make fondant figurines?)  The little dog and kid Superhero are great! Nice Sisters, too...lucky you!

WOWee, OTcakes~that Pokemon Waterfall Cake is unbelievable!  How did you get the waves-the hair dryer? I am not working on anything this week due to a cracked sternum, so I'm just reading and posting pics, getting great advice, ad learning the site. Boyka, those cakes look like they are, and sound like they are, simply delicious!! Makes me want to grab a fork and dive right in! YUM!


Gold Star...I have learned SO much from this place and from YouTube. Seriously...just keep working on it and you can only get better and better. Of course we have also tended to get broker and broker as we bought more tools I just had to have! LOL!


Tdove...I can't say no to Icing Smiles either. I think, even considering your restrictions, you did a simply fantastic job! I can't think of any way you could have possibly been able to have that fondant any smoother considering you couldn't use icing or sugar products (thus ruling out ganache too) of any kind! It is totally adorable!


And your wedding cake is gorgeous!


Newbe86...I just did a zebra print cake for the first time. It's easier than you think it is! Thank goodness since I have another one at the end of August to do! Just find someone's cake here that you like the print and copy the pattern. As for two tier she a girly girl? You could put a big pink fluffy bow around the middle seam where the two tiers meet up and then her initial out of pink fondant on the top as the cake topper? If she is a really "pink" girl then maybe tint the fondant pink and have the black zebra stripes and then a white bow and white initial? Just a couple of ideas. When baking my cakes I make sure each layer is 2 inches tall. So with filling the completed tier is about 4-1/2 inches tall. When you stack two tiers together and add a topper you are close to 10 inches tall! The most important part of a two tier, or more, cake is the structure. So take some time and do a little research on how to use the dowels to support your top tier and you won't have any problems at all and one very happy niece! In the meantime, we are always here to help!
