I've been asked to make a Navy Retirement cake she requested (excuse my lack of knowledge) I have the Female Navy Blue Hat on it.  I'd like to make it out of either fondant, gumpaste, 50/50, or modeling chocolate.  The hat is quite round.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could use to mold the hat?   I don't exactly have any complete round bowls or molds.

AI was in the Navy. The hat is actually white with black trim and band. Also, it's not round. It's more oval and the top is flat.

Do you have an oval cake pan?

AHow big will it be? Are you making it life size or smaller?

AIn that case, I would sculpt it from cake. If you have an oval pan, even better. If not, cut the oval shape from either round or square.

Also, it may help to know the brim is the same size all around. The sides are curved up but are the same size as the rest if the brim. I would use gumpaste for that part or at least 50/50.
