Okay, so I made the head its probably about 8 inches across. THe only dowels I have are the little skewer ones. I have to have it done today so I can give it to the birthday girl tomorrow morning so it will be sitting all night.,So what can I do? Is it possible it could sink?

Some support is better than no support in my opinion, especially if it weighs enough that you're concerned it might sink into your cake. You could use the skewers or straws.
