I 'm trying to teach my self to do cake decorating and would like to know what areas I should get into?

Thats all I've got so far

Also you know those really fancy looking cakes that you get these days - is that Fodant or gumpaste?

I'm taking a course in cake decor this wednesday but thats just baking different cakes and frosting with buttercream. So the rest I'll have learn by myself. So what do you think I need to research on?

Go to you tube and type in anything and everything to do with cakes and look at the tutorials Everything from smoothing cakes to decorating cakes to frosting tips and how to use frosting bags.  and how to make frosting flowers. You will see so many videos and learn much. I don't do caking for a living but just for a hobby so hopefully someone else who knows more about fondant can give you information about that. Here are a few sites.         http://seriouscakes.com/wordpress/

Look on her site for butter cream recipes and where she has videos, click and go to her videos and watch all of them. She shows how to make flowers, how to smooth frosting, how to do frosting bags, etc.

Here's one more if you do not have frosting tips and want to use freezer bags not storage bags because freezer bags are more stronger and will not pop like storage bags. She shows hot to cut bags if you don't have wilton tips:

This has a part 2 video also.

Good luck/ It will take practice, practice and more practice.

You can practice making small cupcakes with and taking paper off and actually decorating it like a cake or use smaller 4 or 6 inch cakes.

You can do it!!! /Mary
