Has anyone made the 3d skull cake using Wiltons 3d pan? I just make the cakes but I need to know the best way to put the face half onto the back half without the face sliding down. I can't find anything on you tube or any tutorials and the directions that came with the pan do not go into any detail.

I just got that mold, and I haven't used it. But, don't you just sandwich it together with filling and keep it, sort of, standing? ---like the skull facing you...?? maybe I'm wrong...--hopefully someone that has use it can give you better advice.
Good luck!

The top half will slide off of the bottom half if you don't put a skewer through it. That worked for me.

Thanks Dani, I did put a small skewer and put a little piece of the extra cake under the face to hold it up. Now I am trying to frost in buttercream and I think I have bitten off more than I can do. What a pain to frost and I am trying to smooth it but it is not working. I think this will go under cake disaster.

I can answer this one!!!! I struggled with EXACTLY that same problem last year and kept making those skulls until I got it right!

Here's my post on the Wilton.com forum with lots of photos and suggestions. Read the entire thread, but pay attention to the October 28, 2011 post about "THINGS I'VE LEARNED THE HARD WAY"
http://www.wilton.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=157138&FTVAR_MSGDBTABLE=

The secret? Making a "shim" out of cake. The thread goes into detail. (A shim is piece of cake that is wedge shaped. It "levels" out the cake. You can look up wooden shim images if you've never heard the word before.)

Here are some pics with captions written at the bottom from last Halloween. My BFF took the cake to work:

I frosted mine VERY thinly with buttercream, smoothed it with viva towels after it set a bit, and then covered it in fondant. Here it is:

Apti - that's a great idea to shim it! I will definitely try that next time.

ebwmom~~try making it without any frosting. The thought of frosting it and then covering with fondant gave me the willies! You could always have a bowl of frosting on the side (with some gummy worms mixed in......) to plop on the unfrosted skull after it is cut and served.

I had a thin layer of buttercream to hold the front and back of the skull together.

Dani1081~~Your skull came out terrific. You put a LOT of time into that dead pirate skull. Beautiful pairing with the black & silver cake below. May I use your photo as inspiration this Halloween?

I didn't have any of the problems other experienced..I just layed the face onto the back piece and it stayed there.I lightly covered in BC and then fondant..Then airbrushed the eye sockets and mouth..Came out great!!

Kiddiekakes~~Although I haven't made one with a crumb coat and fondant, I assume that the fondant covering would be enough to avoid slipping. I didn't want to mess with the buttercream or fondant, and that's where the slipping problem happens.
