I am making a tree stump cake and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to make the tree bark affect?

I would just mark the buttercream or fondant with a veining tool.

If it's buttercream, just use a fork to mark in the direction of the trunk. Just make lines side by side with the fork.
