I love looking at really fancy cakes and trying to figure out how they did them. This cake by Maggie Austin (my cake icon!) has me completely stumped! Anyone know how she did it? I hope the link works, I don't know how to post a pic into a topic.

Looks like chocolate was melted into a mold and then painted with silver lustre dust. Or it could be fondant that was put into a mold and painted with silver lustre dust.

I also think it was done with molds. If you can't find molds like this, you can make your own. For example, you might be able to find a bird figurine at a thrift store if you don't already have one. Then use Amazing Mold Putty or something similar. Press the bird into the silicone mold mixture.

Thank you!! How would I affix the chocolate mold to the cake?

Her sculpting is alot more detailed than mine, but on page two of my photos there is a cake that has birds on it. I sculpted the birds and a branch in oven bake clay...then made a push mold out of them...used fondant/chocolate clay mix and used royal to attach to the cake. I think that wilton has a push mold now with birds and branches that you could try.

LaWmn thanks for the info, your cake (really, all of them!) is stunning! I'm really intrigued with making my own molds...definitely going to try it!

Thank you so much...and if you would like to make your own molds...I use food safe Amazing Mold Putty to make most of my molds.....It is a great product to use to get started...I get mine at either Hobby Lobby or Micheal's when it is in stock and I have a coupon. icon_wink.gif

Thanks so much for the info! I don't have a cake to do next weekend, so I might experiment around with it. I will probably have a few questions I'll PM you if you don't mind icon_smile.gif
