I only do cakes as a hobby but my youngest daughter has asked me to do her wedding cake and I have never done a wedding cake. I agreed and am looking for ideas. Keep in mind I am not a pro and need simple, but elegant, ideas. She has requested no fondant, which I was pleased about because I have never worked with fondant. Looking through the gallery, EVERYTHING is fondant. What happened to the good ole fashioned buttercream frosting wedding cakes????

Not EVERYTHING... some buttercream cakes are so smooth that they look like fondant.

Have you looked at the "2006 All Buttercream Wedding Cake Contest" gallery?:

This is the easiest wedding cake you'll ever do:

Soooooooo easy. As long as your base buttercream is mostly even, it will look fantastic when you are done.
