I had heard you need to be invite as well, but I just went to their site, requested to join and I got a confirmation e-mail a week later. Not sure if it was a promo week or something. Just a friendly FYI that you might be able to join without an invite.
You can, I think it just takes longer. I don't know why you need an invite. A gimmick I suppose.
