I am new to decorating and am totally confused as to what the differences are and when to use gumpaste, fondant and 1/2 fondant with gumpaste. Can someone please help explain the differences to me?

Fondant is an icing and is meant to be used for covering cakes. While it can be used for flowers and decor, it isn't meant to dry hard like gumpaste does.

Gumpaste is edible but meant to be decorative. It dries hard and is good for making flowers, leaves, bows, etc.

A 50/50 mix of fondant and gumpaste is good for making flowers and other decorative items that you want to dry hard. The end result is similar to gumpaste but the fondant gives you more work time on your items before they start to dry.
