I got an idea for a sports cake on this site and I need some ideas on how to make it happen. The cake I want to make will be 3 tiers. Bottom tier will be a 10" round, middle tier will be an 8" round, and the top is half a football. I need some help on how to make the football on top. I am thinking of using half of a 3-D Egg pan, but I know that won't be the exact right shape. I also thought about using the wilton mini wonder mold pan and cut off part of the bottom.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I know you are trying to think of a way to use cake for the football, but would you consider using krispy treats and fondant? Otherwise I think you are on the right path with baking the cake in a shape close to a football and then carving it.
