What would I use to make stand alone characters on a cake (i.e., Red from Fraggle Rock or Penguins)? Would I use gum tex or gum paste? I heard that one of them cracks pretty easy.

Usually when i make characters I either use RKT (majority of the time) then cover in fondant, depending on the character itself OR a 50/50 mixture (half fondant & half gumpaste). either or always works for me. take a look at my photos.

I, too, use cereal treats then cover them in fondant. I have several in my photos. All of them are made that way.

You both make awesome cakes. My daughter also uses RKT. Thanks for the tips. I'll use RKT too.

Gum tex is a powder added to fondant to create a gum paste-like product.
