I am going to create, sculpt a paste or fondant bonsai tree for the topper of my sisters wedding cake, which I will also attach some paste flowers and leaves to. I plan on making a base of wire that will serve as a frame and 'solid' structural base for the paste or fondant to adhere to, and will also form parts of branches and anchor the topper to the cake.

Should I use fondant or gum paste?
Is there any problem with shrinkage as they dry?
Any suggestions on what kind of wire to use for example non-toxic or coated stuff

I will post a picture when it is done, I am excited to get it started,
as the wedding is in June, and I have to wait a while to get the other stuff done.

thanks

Jennifer

What about using rice krispies treat mixture to form the tree and then cover with fondant?

gumpaste leaves and flowers on wires. then wired to stronger wire for brnaches. when all are wired together, that forms the trunk (which, depending on how thick you envision it, you can make out of several strong wires bundled togeher andwrapped). All wire is covered with florist's tape, obviously.
