Cakes That Are Too Weird To Cut Into

I love making cakes and feel so thrilled to try to make anything out of cake, but there have been a few requests from friends and family or ideas they've had on cake that make me cringe.
I have a friend who wants a pregnant belly cake. I know this a growing trend, but for me the thought of cutting into a pregnant belly makes me cringe. Perhaps its because I had a c-section.
Then I got to thinking of other cake ideas that would make me cringe.
Here's my list. I would love to hear from others on making cakes that would make them uneasy.
1) snakes
2) life like insects
3) any male or female anatomy
I totally agree with the belly cake. Im also weirded out by people wanting a cake that looks just like their pet that they plan to cut up and eat! CREEPY!!! Perhaps a cake with a dog figurine but I would NOT cut into a life sized Golden Retreiver cake!!!!
THe "grossest" one I did was a horses head (see gallery). Not only was it creepy to cut it up but to begin with it was a beheaded horse (The GodFather much?!) not my thing! hahah
I have to agree...the whole real life meets cake kind of freaks me out. Whenever I see a cake that looks like a pregnant belly, baby, unicorn, etc...all I can imagine are the pics that will be taken as the cake is being cut. Too morbid for me! lol!
Amen to the pet and baby cakes. Really who wants to eat a baby's butt. I know I hear it all the time they say babies are so cute they want to eat them up, but do you really!
I totally agree with the pregnant belly cake. I have recently been asked to do one, and whilst I have agreed (its business after all), I am totally weirded out by it! I wouldnt be as bothered by the animal ones, except where the customer would as for red velvet - now THAT really is the grossest thing ever! Lets get a nice cake done of a cute puppy, and then make it red inside so its realistic when we cut into it - seriously??? lol
The weirdest one I ever had a request for was an extremely detailed female anatomy cake, with red velvet cake inside.
And yes, I did make it. I needed to get my air conditioner fixed more than I needed to think about what kind of person would want a cake like that.
I was asked to make a horse head for a childs western theme birthday party. It seems like that would have been a bit gross to 7 yr olds. Glad I didn't have to be there.
Agree with all of the above. I'd like to add toilet cakes to the list. I can't think of anything that would spoil my appetite more. I don't think I could even bear to make one, never mind cut or eat one...actually, just posting about it makes me a little queasy!
I'm always searching videos on youtube, and inevitably the realistic life size baby cake is there with someone getting ready to cut the cake, I know its cake, but it really bothers me.
anything that would be breathing human or animal...........and don't even get me started on the toilet cake thats just sick
A baby that seems real on youtube - they're cutting the top of his head...
Then all 'salty food' cakes - chips, hamburgers, fried fish, steaks - just looking at them I feel sick. Eating something you expect to have a particular taste and then feel the sweetness - bleah. I know, it's cake and it has to be sweet... However, I appreciate a nice execution of these cakes.
I'd eat a pregnant belly, insects, snakes, male or female anatomy or baby butt (no head, please) without problems.
It's a good thread, tdovewings!
I've seen cakes with the face of the birthday person printed on edible paper. Can't imagine cutting up the face of my loved one even if it is only cake!!
I am happy that others share my 'distaste' for the baby cake, the pregnant belly and the toilet bowl cake. I can appreciate the artistry of the baby cake but it ends there!
But as for food that looks like other food, the french fry, the spaghetti and meatballs, the hamburger, that's my favorite category!! You just have to look at my gallery to see how much I do like it! And let's not forget how many of us will be making the 'cooked Thanksgiving turkey cake' soon! I hope to be one of them if I can just find the time. Thanks for posting the discussion!!
I'm a hobby baker. The only cakes I would feel uncomfortable making would be "naughty cakes". I'm not making anything my 8, 10, and 11 years old niece/nephews can't view.
I recently heard of a pregnant belly cake where gelatin was used to make the "see-thru" pregnant belly with the baby inside. This was pretty much the reaction of everyone talking about it--EWWWWWWWWW!!
I agree with the pregnant belly, the pets and the toilet bowl. And while I think the idea is really cute, I can't bring myself to do the cat litter box.
As for food items, that's my favorite too, making any cake that looks like other foods. When we did our turkey cake, we didn't just do the turkey, we did the ENTIRE Thanksgiving dinner as dessert, including a cake pumpkin pie with fondant crust. This one is in our gallery. We did the peas and carrots from fondant, Irish potato candies for the potatoes, jello for the cranberry (shaped in the can and all), banana muffins for the stuffing and French Vanilla Cool Whip for the gravy. No one in the family knew we made this, just that we did dessert. (We did still have real pumpkin pie for the purists). It was so much fun laying out the dinner table looking like it had just been an hour before when everyone had their turkey dinner.
The pregnant belly cake with long nails is gross, any genitalia, baby cake, toilet cake-horrible, the list is endless, lol
I can't stand the pregnant belly cake! Haven't been asked to do one yet, and I hope I never do!
We refuse to do "adult novelty cakes" or whatever they're called.
