I need to make a cake shaped like an urn. Yes, a funeral urn. I have a general idea of how I want to do it. I made a cake base with a thick dowel screwed to the center that will be cut off at just below the full height of the cake. I was going to stack 6 cakes... a 6", four 8", and one more 6" then carve to the desired urn shape. Or two 6", three 8", and one 6". I will bake enough to try both ways.
Anyway, I know I need to add something to support the weight. I was wondering if just using a cardboard cake round after the third cake and dowels would do the trick, just like doing a stacked tiered cake. My worry is the smaller base supporting the larger middle portion.
has anyone had anything similar (perhaps a topsy turvy) and knows any tips?
