Small wooden skewers are great to make things stand up I use those in my numbers all the time. As far as glue. When I am attaching fondant to fondant, I use water or an extract. Toothpicks are also great. I have seen people use wires to run through the body for legs and arms. I just use toothpicks. I just finished Pat Pat rocket and I used toothpicks to construct it. It is in my pictures if you want to see that.

I use pieces of spaghetti to connect arms and legs and heads, or toothpicks sometimes. I use water or egg white as glue to attach.
