Shortening As Ingredient In Mmf Or Just To Grease???

I made mmf before by hand. I'm so confused now that I have my KA!! Do you use shortening as an ingredient or just to grease everything?
I keep finding different MMF recipes.
Some say all i need is water, marshmallows and ps. Others say put in some shortening.
I don't remember what I did last time. 
Anybody? I'm awaiting your replies to start...
