I have made tons of batches of buttercream icing. All of a sudden they are starting to have a metal taste. I used the same ingredients, utensils to make it. One week I have two batches that had that taste, one week later I make another batch and it taste fine! I have no idea what is happening. I use 2lbs of confectioners sugar (same brand always), 2 crisco sticks, wilton clear vanilla, and milk!

Any ideas on what I could be doing? Thanks!

Are you using a stand mixer? Sounds like the beater is hitting the sides of the bowl. If that is the problem, you can adjust it -just check your user manual for the instructions, or find the manual online.

I had the same thing happen to me and I realized that the coating on the mixing paddle was coming off ( it was also making whatever I was mixing turn a slightly gray color...Yuck!). I got a new paddle immediately.

How many people tasted it? The reason I am asking is metallic taste can be a sign of an infection....
