I know the same question has probably already been asked, so im sorry in advance icon_smile.gif

Im making my daughter a 'hoot the owl' cake (puppet on Aus tv) for her 2nd birthday in a few months. Im just wondering the best way to bake a sphere cake. Im going to do it 1 half at a time as I only have 1 tin.

I also have no idea the best way to decorate. Im not good with fondant at all, I usually just use icing sugar.

I will try and post a pic of hoot, any tips or ideas are greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

The ball pan comes in two halves.

Consider purchasing a ball pan set like this one from Wilton, http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?sku=2105-6506. It's really the best way to bake a sphere shaped cake IMO.

If you want to stick primarily with icing, I would use a star or leaf tip and pipe on "feathers" all over the body and head. then use other colors or fondant cutouts for the face. I'd do the wings and feet with fondant or modeling chocolate to give them more dimension. HTH!
