we are getting ready to do a buttercream cake that has fondant drapes on it - afraid the drapes will not hold onto the buttercream - any suggestions???

I'd say put skewers into the thickest parts of the drapes and stick the other end of the skewers WAY into the cake.

i agree with marianna, better to be safe than to have swags falling and ruining your smooth fondant!
