I have been asked to make a strawberry shortcake , note the filling will be whip cream and strawberries.
Any suggestions to what works well as a final layer? THey are looking for a beach theme...so it has to be either buttercream or fondant.

Are you using real shortcake? If it is real shortcake I would probaby just use a stabalized whipped cream. I think that tastes best with shortcake, and it can be as smooth buttercream. Buttercream would also work well. I think fondant would be my last resort. But you just may have to experiment.
