I have an electric hand mixer, that seems to do the job, but ...
Does the stand mixers really make a big difference, I do think a hand mixer may be too fast?

nothing beats having a stand mixer. Especially when you need to mix for extended period of time and to lessen air incorporated (as in big buttercream batches). Takes your baking to a whole different level!
