I am making a gift box cake and placing an already dried fondant lid on top. My question is, do I need to dowel my cake so that the lid does not smush the top?

TIA

If you look in my pix, I did that for my Tiffany Box cake. I didn't dowel that cake.

I should add that it is a round gift box iced in buttercream.

bobwonderbuns...thanks for responding. Your tiffany cake box cake LOOKS GREAT! I recently ordered sugarshacks DVD and can't wait to try the techniques.

My cake is iced in buttercream and not fondant. I wasn't sure if the lid would be too heavy to be supported by the cake.
