What are you using to apply it?

I find water or piping gel creates problems.

I use a small amount of shortening on the back of dark fondant cutouts to adhere it to buttercream, since it diesn't gey the black fondant moist there is no color bleed. A ltllte buttercream should work too.

They will be 1/2. 1/4. and 1" strips that circle around the cake at different levels.
