So I made my daughter a three tiered cake for her 2nd bday. I doweled each individual layer, then I ran a dowel through the center of all three cakes. I let the cakes settle a little bit prior to putting the center dowel. However, the center dowel started coming through the top of the cake. Fortunately the cake was for me, not a customer, and I was able to hide the dowel, for the most part, but why did this happen.

I can only assume it is because of the weight and the settling of the cake, but what can I do in the future to avoid this in the future???

Ive heard that they have to be cut at least an inch below the top of the cake
