I am making a chocolate cake for a baby shower. It will be frosted in buttercream. What's a good, simple filling? Is a thin layer of chocolate filling too rich with the buttercream icing?

I don't think that a thin layer of chocolate filling would be too rich. Is it a vanilla buttercream? You could also just use buttercream as your filling if you wish, or put a layer of raspberry puree. I've also mixed cherry preserves with a vanilla buttercream and used that as my filling.

a chocolate ganache would be wonderful and it is very easy.

a close second choice for me is raspberry filling (i just use the wilton recipe with frozen raspberries...it is very good).

If I use a fruit filling (maybe raspberries?), then is it okay for that to sit out for the next 24 hours until the shower tomorrow?
