How To Use An Icing Comb?

Can someone please tell me how to use these things, I tried for the first time the other day and I dont know if I let my buttercreme crust too much cause I was also trying to smooth the cake out with the viva before I swiped it with the comb, well when I combed just looked like I kinda scratched a bunch of frosting off the cake it wasnt smooth at all I thought I was combing softly, I even tried dipping the comb in hot water before combing..can someone help me out and tell me what Im doing wrong?? I would say that it would be best to do before the icing has crusted. You also want to put a good amount of icing on, because you are going to scrap some off while you are doing the comb.

Thank you I will try it that way....I hope it works for me, it seems like this is all so difficult but I love doing it....I just wish it could all come together the way I would like without so many mess ups haha
