I'm having trouble getting a deep brown icing. Are there any secrets to it?

I had this same problem on the last cake I did. I used the Americolor Chocolate Brown to tint my fondant it was a weird pinkish color. I guess I should look for a different brown. I ended up painting with that gel and extract. I guess icing would be a bit different. Can you start with a chocolate icing and then darken it from there?

For my son's monkey birthday cake (see my photos), I ended up adding some melted chocolate and some cocoa to my buttercream until the chocolate flavor was right, but it still wasn't the right color. I added brown icing color to make up the difference. Good luck!
