Minis, standard, or jumbo? My buttercream recipe yields 8 cups (or about 2.5 lbs) and does a triple swirl on 24 standard cupcakes (with just a bit left over). I would think that means you need a small BOATLOAD of buttercream! So about 10 pounds for 100 and 100 pounds for 1000? Somebody help me out here. That seems like a lot.

I just made 50 cupcakes for a baby shower and they were swirled with a 1m tip. I make my own buttercream frosting using Crisco. I needed two bags of powdered sugar or 16 cups. Now I will admit that when i use the 1m swirl I frost the entire cupcake and there is a lot of frosting on them, but that is what the client wanted. LOTS OF FROSTING!!!! I did have some frosting left over so hopefully this will help. Let me know how things come out.

They would be standard size cupcakes. I will be using the large ateco 849 tip, using just enough icing to cover the cupcake, going around 1 1/2 times.
