I'm making some cupcakes for a party today and I purchased some plastic stars on a stick (princess wands) a few weeks ago with the intention of using them as toppers.

I opened them last night and the silver "paint" seems to be kind of flaky, so I don't want to stick it directly into the cupcake. Is there any way to make that kind of food safe, like dipping the stick part in royal icing to sort of seal it, or should I just throw them all away?
