I was wondering if anyone saw on Food Network Challenge the blind date birthday cake challenge. Her cake was three bottom tiers then a pole and three topsy turvy tiers on top. I saw a blip where she was smoothing the side of the cake and it looked like she had a piece of plexiglass on top of the cake and bottom and she was using them as a guide as she was smoothing the sides. I wondered afterwards how did she smooth the top? I was wondering if anyone used that method and if so how it worked.

I have no idea, but here's the cake:

The Pink Cake Box website shows some pictures that might help you figure it out.

Its actually x-ray film being used to smooth the rolled fondant. It is more flexible than normal rigid fondant-smoothers ..

It looked like a cake board to me... I wonder if they put a cake board on the top and the bottom to get that crisp sharp top edge, I've often wondered how they did that.
