Start with smoothing all the way around the top inch of the cake, then once that is smoothed work down another inch and so on.
As you get to the parts that are gathered, lift them out and away from the cake as you smooth it down.

cut with a piZZA CUTTER, BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT TOO CLOSE AND MAKE IT SHORT..OOPS sorry caps was on....lol
