I went to a wedding last weekend and the buttercream on the cake and cupcakes looked glossy, the glossy was all the way through the icing when I bit into it, I am certain it was a shorting base buttercream since it was an outdoor wedding and over 80 degrees outside (the reception was actually held in a shed refered to as the dance barn)
sorry no pics, the glossy didn't show up when I took a pic with dh's cell.

I use a shortening/butter icing and depending and my icing occasionally has a gloss to it. It's from the butter fats melting.
