do I have to use a cake stand for multi-tier cakes? or can I just sit eat tier on top of the last? how do i go about doing that?

Each tier(cake) is on it's own cake board,period. Then you can "stack" with supports for each tier. There are different methods for support of the tier on top of another- dowels, staws, SPS. Dowels and straws are prob the cheapest, but need to be done correctly for structure and cakes MUST be level. I prefer SPS works perfect even when i'm not, but I do sometimes use dowels on free/practice cakes.
