I've never worked with gum paste before, and I'd like to try making some realistic birds. Can anyone point me to some good tutorials or resources for making birds? I checked the tutorial thread with the animals and I didn't see birds listed.

How far in advance can gum paste figures be made? How should I color the birds? Should I use powdered coloring?

I attached an example of a cake with gum paste birds. It's a Martha Stewart cake but I liked the birds and the site said they're made of gum paste.

Here's the picture of the cake:

I guess I should mention that I'm trying to make cardinals.

Also, do you think I should look up books about sculpting? Since I've never worked with gum paste before I have no idea what it feels like or anything. How do you attach parts like wings? I know with fondant you can use water.

Thanks again!
Annie
