Advice On Topsy-Turvy Cakes.

I have seen two ways of making a topsy-turvy cake.

1) Carving in to the top of the cake and setting another on top.

2) Using wedges.

Could someone please tell me what the pros and cons are for each and in the long run which way is the safest for me to try for my first time.
