How You Stack Cakes Without Messing Up The Cake Below?

This is my second stacked cake and I've not quite figured out how to stack them without putting small dents in the bottom cake where my fingers touched it. Any suggestions?

Only push the dowels in halfway, then set the top tier on the dowels. The weight of the tier will push the dowels into the cake the rest of the way slowly, leaving you time to get your hands out from underneath.
