I have a 14" square cake and it has started breaking into pieces. So in order to try to save it before I couldn't put it back together I quartered the cake figuring that if I put it back together on the cake board that I'd be able to make it stable. Will this work? I don't really have time to bake another layer but can if I need to.

I've actually put a cake back together like this. It came out fine! I had to use a little extra buttercream icing but it was stable.

Well, after getting the cake together and delivered, it did turn out alright. Thanks for the tip! I'll probably do this again in the future, since it made it easier to move around.
