How do you repeat a stencil pattern on a cake with Royal Icing without messing up the part you just finished?

The only solution in my head is to let each section dry before continuing to the next section, however, wouldn't that take forever?

that would be my suggestion... let each section dry - at least somewhat. If the RI is pretty think, it shouldn't take too long for each section to dry enough that you don't smear it when you do the next section.
