I am making a three tired wedding cake for my friend in July. She wants one tier lemon sponge, one vanilla sponge and the third chocolate sponge. The entire cake is going to be iced with white fondant. Do i need to cover the chocolate tier with anything before I ice it? I am afraid that the chocolate will discolour the icing if I dont?. Has anyone got any ideas or experiences from icing a chocolate cake? Thanks xXx

You definitely need to ice the cake with something before applying the fondant or it won't stick to the cake.

But...the chocolate cake isn't going to color the fondant.

Cover it with a thin layer of buttercream and then put the fondant on top. It wouldnt stick to just the cake itself so you have to cover it anyways.
