Almost finished with a baby shower cake for a friend of mine. Two tier, top is chocolate cake with crusting cream cheese frosting, bottom tier is french vanilla with buttercream. I was able to quilt the bottom tier and attach the fondant ruffle to the bottom of the cake with royal icing (hope it holds up). Then, I started putting all the little cherry blossom fondant flowers on the joint between the two, and noticed that the cream cheese icing looked like it was getting a little too soft. So, I'm done for the night. Gumpaste booties and fondant bow are done and drying. All that's left is attaching the rest of the flowers and then the delivery. Phew! My second real event! Yay!

Plus, i get to help EAT the cake, not that i will really want to at that point, but what the hey icon_smile.gif

ugh, watching Say Yes to the Dress & the MOB is such a stick in the mud! thinks $2200 is too much to spend on a dress. says a wedding is a waste of money, it's just a big party!

I love say yes to the dressicon_smile.gif but I couldn't imagine spending that much on a dress... I'm not cheap really just not into fashion. I just finished a batch of choc chip cookies. Supposedly the double tree hotel recipe. I hope they're as good as the ones at the hotel.

I'm giving dummies another go. I swear I'm missing something so simple. I just cannot get them to look right. I've tried Royal, buttercream, and now fondant. It's bad when you have to repair them with drywall mud, right? icon_smile.gif

I finally found some Alpine locally. Well, within half an hour; that's local for here. LOL One store has it but only in a 50 lb. box. This other place measures it out and sells it 2 lbs. at a time for $7.95. I don't have near enough volume for 50 lbs. right now so I'm really excited to find it in smaller amounts. I can't wait to give it a try and see what all the hubbub is about!

I love Alpine! a 50# cube lasts 3-4 weeks.

And I think dummies work best with fondant.

I finished a 3 tier baby shower cake for tomorrow, 288 cupcakes decorated with white fondant on top of each cupcake and a black strip across it and a bow in the middle and the 6" cutting cake is in the oven as we speak. My feet are killing me. I need to invest in really good shoes for all this standing I am doing.

I had my husband help me with the cupcakes. I did all the cutouts and bows last weekend. His job was to glue the black strip and bow on the cupcakes. I must say, he did a really good job.

I just finished crumb coating my cakes and have a question. How long after you mix & color your BC (I use Indydebi's recipe) should you wait before filling your cake with it?

I just fill with BC and when I did that last night, I thought my icing I had just made was too soft. Tonight when I went to crumb coat with that same icing I think it was too stiff because it kept falling off and taking the cake skin with it. I mixed a little more milk with it and no more falling off the cake. Now back to finishing my baby.

is exhausted but not done yet. i'm working on a two tier cake for a Marine, who is getting deployed in a few days. i also have an 8 inch princess cake and an 8 inch square super marios cake.

i just feel like i haven't had a day off in forever! i used to count on having mon. and tues. off, but this past weekend i had 7 orders, then 1 big cake for monday, a big one on wed., a bridal consult on thurs., and now tonight i'm working on 3 for tom. i'm trying to not complain and trust me, i feel soooo blessed that my company is thriving, but i'm barely able to keep my head above water right now. i'm a stay at home mom with a 1 and 3 year old and have a legal home kitchen. i feel like i never leave b/c i'm glued to my kitchen! i'm trying to remember that i get to stay home with my kids and it's all b/c of the cake business, but at 12:45 am (with many more hours to go) it's hard to think happy thoughts icon_smile.gif

thanks for letting me vent!

so as i just went back to read this, i realized that the cake i'm doing for the Marine should be a reality check for me. the fact that he's about to be deployed for the 3rd time, the fact that he'd probably love to be home "too much," the fact that eventually i will get to go crawl in to my comfy bed, when he'll get to sleep on a cot, etc. what i'm going through tonight is nothing in comprison and i need to get over myself!

God bless our troops!

I also got a cool little 3 drawer organizer to organize all my cutters, punches, tips, fondant tools etc etc

I broke down and got one also because I just hated having cutters, tappits, dusts, etc in a box. I also ended up getting another set of rubbermaid containiers for my kitchen because I realized I was gradually using more of the shallow/rectangle ones for premaid flowers and decorations. lol

LOL andreamen1! I was just telling my mom that yesterday!

I spent the whole day at my kiddos' school (Career Day), so didn't get to do much caking till after bedtime. Throwing in the towel for the night ... my son's dragon cake is about 90% done, and I preliminarily put the dragons on it to see how they would fit. But my brain is pretty fried by now, so please let me know if their configuration should be different. I still need to finish painting a couple of them, and I need to paint the mountain itself tomorrow, and put teeth and wings on a couple of the dragons, but here it is for now.

Hi all! I'm up and trying my first batch of Sugarshack's frosting icon_smile.gif Baking a cake for my Wilton class tomorrow. I guess I'm cheating by not using the Wilton buttercream recipe - but it's just a bit on the sweet side for me so wanted to give this a try!

icon_surprised.gif Don't tell your instructor that. They push 100% Wilton. icon_lol.gif I, frankly, think it is too sweet, too. So I use almond flavoring. Everyone raves that mine tastes "so edible." Makes me laugh every time I hear that.

Haha - no I didn't plan on letter her know icon_smile.gif Edible eh? lol - well I'd hope so.

Well I'm at the "let er rip" mixing phase of sugarshacks. I had to take a little taste test. It's much much better on the sweetness level than the Wilton buttercream but it seems more greasy - texture wise. I'll wait until it's finished mixing though and taste test again. I think it actually needs a bit more vanilla than I put in - but I only have the brown vanilla on hand and I'm worried about color change! I guess it doesn't matter too much though since the cake is just for the family anyway icon_smile.gif THink I'll go ahead and add just a bit more. I really need to get some clear vanilla.

I finished smoothing the BC on the bottom tier patting myself on the back for such a nice finish on the top surface only to remember that nice finish will be covered with a 6" tier. I did get the baby done (all except the ears) for the top of the Baby Shower Cake I'm working on. Now just waiting for the BC to crust on my top tier. A few more fondant pieces to do tonight and then hopefully sleep.

Thanks Gscout. I'm kind of doing things backwards. I've spent more time practicing to model with fondant than anything else. So now I'm trying to master the cake construction and whatnot so what I model doesn't look out of place.

When you get to the venue just set the top tier on the plate and you're done.

Thanks so much for the great advice Leah! You saved me alot of worrying last night icon_biggrin.gif
