How Long Is Wafer Paper Good?

I have a sheet of wafer paper butterflies that has been stored in a ziploc bag. The problem is that I can't remember when I bought it, so it's years old. I just got it out and cut out one of the butterflies and that worked fine. I can't get over how old it is, though. How long does wafer paper last? I've been out of cake decorating for a while but I have a friend that wants butterflies on some cupcakes she's making, and these would be perfect to use.

Another question, do people actually eat wafer paper? I made a cake with wafer paper flames one time and no one really ate the flames. Maybe if no one ate the butterflies, the age wouldn't be an issue, lol.

Thanks for helping an "out-of-the-loop" cake decorator!
