There's a local contest coming up which I'm thinking about entering. The only problem is none of my ideas are what I feel interesting enough.
The theme is "mushrooms" and it must 75% cake and is not a taste testing event, just looks only.
My problem is everyone else always does the mushroom house with the gnomes or fairies or they do the tree with the mushrooms on and around it, woodland theme. I want to do something different....
I'm a realist so I tend to do more realistic looking things but I'm just at a loss to come up with something different for the contest.
So, if anyone has any ideas on what to do that's within my capabilities, please let me know.

Hmm, other than what you already mentioned, that seems like a tough topic. Maybe mushrooms in a basket, or some kind of food made with mushrooms, like a salad with sliced mushrooms, or stuffed mushrooms, mushrooms soup, mushroom pizza, or make it look like a table with several mushrooms foods.

You could do a forest scene with mushroom patches, all different kind of varieties, and have a pig on a leash rooting around looking for truffles, and the guy holding a basket of truffles

Or, how about one of those posters that has different food items on it? You could make the mushrooms 3 D, or just leave flat to look more like a poster.

Found a few pics in the gallery.
This one has cookies, but you could make the basket from cake and the mushrooms from fondant or meringues.

I have always wanted to do a cake with mushrooms. I live in Florida and we have amazingly beautiful cypress swamps. You'll often see fallen trees that have mushrooms the size of dinner plates growing out the side. I'd just do a bing/google image search and see what strikes you and let your imagination run. (I agree, no fairys or gnomes though!)

Thanks for all the ideas everyone! Sometimes it's hard to think outside the box and I didn't really want to do the norm (or the gnome!).
