How does one work toward competing on the cake shows on tv?

You might ask Jennifer Dontz (JenniferMI here on CC), she recently competed in the ultimate cake off.

Hi!
For Ultimate Cake Off you usually have to apply. I was an assisant both times, so I really don't know where you do that. Hopefully someone else can chime in and tell you.
