I've done it twice and I've used MMF both times. I first roll the fondant out really thick so I can stretch it so I don't get any creases or folds. That seems to be the best idea that I've found. I then just keep smoothing it out with both hands while holding the ball.

I end up with excess fondant on the bottom half of the sphere. I gather the excess and cut it, then work the seam together with a little crisco and a fondant smoother. You can work it where the line virtually disapears. I've never done it where I don't cut the fondant. I usually end up covering the line up with some addition or other.
