pound cake is the best recipe to carve cake with, my second choice is a dense butter cake, like one of Colette Peters.

i like the WASC recipe on this site

edit: i should elaborate. i like how the WASC is dense and has a fine crumb. it's not as dense as pound cake (in my opinion), but i find that it's less crumbly than the pound cake recipe i've been using (paula deen's).
