So, after looking through loads of wine bottle cake pictures I've noticed that there are not too many standing up bottles and was wondering why?

I would like to make a standing one but, if this is something really hard to do I'll settle for a crate one.

Any suggestions or ideas from any experienced wine bottle makers?

P.S ~ I would like to do this all out of cake!

TIA,

Alica

Probably because it would need to be a pretty big bottle to yield enough servings. The crate part of the cake provides most of the servings. On some of those cakes, the wine bottle isn't made of cake at all.

If you want to make a super-size wine bottle, all you need to do is stack rounds, providing support (board & dowels) every 2 layers.

The top could be molded out of fondant or candy clay.

see these sites for standing bottle examples:

http://members.nuvox.net/~zt.proicer/aolchats/980326ch.htm (scroll down a bit)

principal is the same -- just shape to look like wine bottle.

Thanks for the replies! Decided to go with a crated one, nice to know it can be done! If you needed more cake I was thinking you could stand a few bottles together! Perhaps a wine, a red and a zinfandel?

Happy Caking!
