I am doing a smash cake for 1yr old. Any suggestions on recipe for simple cake, not too sweet?

I normally make a smaller version of the birthday cake and decorate it in a favorite character of the child's or whatever the theme of the party is. I use the 4" pan and just make it one layer for the child to "tear into".

Chocolate is traditional, as it shows up best on pictures.
Wacky cakes aren't too sweet.
